Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is an evidence-based therapy rooted in the AIP model, which posits that psychological distress results when traumatic or highly disturbing experiences are inadequately processed before being stored in the brain, resulting in strong negative emotions, anxiety, or unhealthy beliefs. EMDR helps individuals access and reprocess these distressing memories in a controlled and safe therapeutic setting. By facilitating the brain’s natural ability to integrate memories, individuals experience a reduction in  the intensity of negative emotions, physical sensations, and maladaptive beliefs associated with past experiences.

Although EMDR was initially developed for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), research supports its effectiveness for a broad range of conditions, including anxiety, phobias, depression, relationship difficulties, and certain behavioral challenges. Many people find that EMDR not only reduces distressing symptoms, but also helps them develop healthier perspectives and coping strategies. Over time, this can lead to greater emotional resilience and improved overall functioning in daily life.

EMDR can benefit children, adolescents, and adults, including individuals who have difficulty verbalizing their experiences. It can also useful when traditional talk therapy has been insufficient. Dr. Kaskel is an EMDRIA-approved clinician and integrates EMDR within a thoughtful, individualized treatment framework. Her approach prioritizes safety, efficiency, and meaningful change.
